What Is Your Website For?

What is the purpose of your website?
How does your website contribute to your bottom line?
How do you measure your website’s performance?

Many companies have websites which seem to have no real purpose other than being an online brochure. But a website can be so much more than that. Everyday web technology allows you to interact with your site visitors – get their comments, involve them, and build a relationship with them.

Here are some things your website could be doing:

Getting subscriptions to a newsletter. If you’re not building a list of your potential clients’ names and email addresses, you can be sure that your competitors are.

Starting and maintaining a conversation. Marketing today is about much more than putting your product in front of people and expecting them to buy. People buy from people they like and trust. You need to build a relationship, and one way to do that is by getting them to come back to your website regularly. You can do this by encouraging visitors to post comments on your articles. Even if you get comments from people in Iceland or Peru, who may never buy your products, they add to the user experience for your local customers.

Teaching your customers. You know all about your product. You know what it can do, and how to use it most effectively. Why aren’t you sharing your knowledge with your customers? Do case studies, shootouts, explain the concepts – educate your customers so that they know when your competitors are being economical with the truth.

Measuring performance. How many new subscribers did your website get last month? Where did most of your new visitors come from? How many website visitors became customers? Website analytics systems, like Google Analytics, make it easy to see where your visitors came from, and what they were looking for.

Add value. Never forget that adding value to your customers lives is one of the reasons you’re in business. The more people you serve, the more money you can make. Give your customers something to remember you by.
